A team from Tampa General Hospital is helping the Florida Senate develop a plan for the 2021 legislative session in an effort to reduce spread of the coronavirus as lawmakers gather to conduct state business.
Wilton Simpson, the soon-to-be Senate president, announced the partnership in a memo Tuesday that went to all senators and their staffs. It said Tampa General will help “develop educational information ... on practical, actionable infection prevention steps.”
The hospital’s Prevention Response Outreach team, made up of prevention experts from Tampa General and the University of South Florida medical school, will start work in Tallahassee this week, the hospital said in a news release. Members will evaluate all Senate areas, including the Senate chamber, committee rooms and offices.
The team will support the Senate on an ongoing basis, as circumstances of the pandemic could change, the news release said. Tampa General president and CEO John Couris called the work a “real honor."
“We are dedicated to safeguarding the health and well-being of the citizens of Florida, and that includes creating a safe environments for our elected officials to work,” Couris said in the release. “Our elected officials have work to do, and with the Tampa General and USF Health strategies in place, they can safely focus on the policies that affect our state.”
Tampa General created the prevention team in May to support organizations and businesses that needed help making plans to keep employees and visitors safe from the coronavirus as they reopen. The hospital is also advising the Florida Aquarium, The Straz Center for the Performing Arts, the Tampa Bay Lightning and TECO on best practices.
