TAMPA — A suspect in the armed robbery of a Dollar General store was shot about five blocks away during an encounter with two police officers responding to the call, Tampa police said.

Details about how the shooting occurred were not released during a news conference just before noon by police Chief Brian Dugan. Dugan said one of the officers was wearing a body camera and he hoped to provide more information later today.

“The officers ended up having a shooting,” Dugan said during the news conference near the Dollar General store, 3110 N 50th St just north of Interstate 4.

The suspect was at a hospital but Dugan didn’t know whether he had survived the shooting. A firearm was recovered from him, the chief said.

“The officers are physically okay,” Dugan said. "I can tell you emotionally they’re very upset. I don’t know whether he returned fire or not.”

Dugan said he did not know whether the suspect fired at the officers, one a 48-year-old veteran of 25 years with the Police Department and the other 24 with two years of service.

The officers responded to a call around 9:20 a.m. about the Dollar General robbery and received information about the suspect, Dugan said. The suspect fled the store north on 49th Street, apparently on foot, and had traveled five blocks when officers encountered him near the National Liquor and Package store, 3401 N 50th St.

Police were interviewing witnesses from the Dollar General store and surveying the area of the robbery and shooting.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the incident under an agreement with Tampa police covering shootings that involve officers.

Police closed 50th Street from Interstate 4 north and rerouted traffic as they conducted their investigation.

The Dollar General is across the street from the scene where two Tampa police officers, Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis, were shot to death during a traffic stop in 2014. Two crosses still mark the spot. Dontae Morris was found guilty of the shootings in 2014 and is awaiting execution.
