STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Despite the city’s website stating that coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccines would be administered by appointment, there was a wait of up to two hours reported by some Staten Islanders who received the vaccine at two of the borough’s vaccination hubs that opened on Saturday.
Port Richmond High School, at 85 St. Joseph’s Ave. in Port Richmond, and Staten Island Technical High School, at 485 Clawson St. in New Dorp, had long lines of people who had registered online for the vaccine and waited outside in chilly weather on Saturday to receive it.
An Oakwood resident who had a 2 p.m. appointment at Port Richmond High School said he waited 1 1/2 hours on a line behind about 75 people that inched along St. Joseph’s Street, with about 15 people moving forward about every 10 minutes, he said.
“After an hour, the line reached the school cafeteria entrance, where about 15 more people stood in front. At the front, they were dispatched to numbered tables to receive their shot,” said the Oakwood resident.
Meanwhile, at Staten Island Technical High School, another Oakwood resident told the Advance he and his wife waited in line for more than two hours past their appointment time, and the line was “at least two football fields long.”
Of the long lines and wait time, Patrick Gallahue, spokesperson, NYC Health Department said: “New Yorkers are showing up and getting vaccinations by the thousands. Today was the first day at both of these sites and despite a few technical glitches we’ve been able to get people in for their shots. We were encouraged by the turnout and excited to see New Yorkers getting vaccinated.”
SMOOTH PROCESS
But once inside, the Oakwood resident who received his vaccine at Port Richmond High School said the process to actually be vaccinated ran smoothly. There were technicians wearing yellow disposable overcoats who administered the vaccine at 11 tables, following a brief run through of precautionary questions, he said.
Vaccine recipients then moved to the other side of the cafeteria, where they waited for 15 minutes to ensure they had no adverse reactions, he said.
Early arrivals did not benefit — recipients were admitted based on their appointment time.
OTHER VACCINATION SITES
There are several other locations to obtain the vaccine with an appointment on Staten Island. To make an appointment, go to: https://vaccinepod.nyc.gov/. To find the hub nearest to you, go to: NYC Vaccine Finder.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR VACCINE NOW
On Monday, the city began vaccinating eligible members of the community in the Phase 1b group — those 75 and older, education workers, first responders, public transit workers, and public safety workers.
Mayor Bill De Blasio has said people who live and work in shelters along with grocery store workers who interact with the public are eligible in the 1b phase.
Healthcare professionals and residents of nursing homes were in the first phase of vaccinations.
