Getting our shots was simple and painfree
Kudos to those who organized the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines for Hillsborough County. My husband and I are 74 and residents of Naples. After a considerable amount of fruitless time spent online trying to determine where we could get the vaccine, we found that CDR Health Pro for Hillsborough was by far the most navigable, organized website of the seven other counties we looked at in our surrounding area. And even more astounding was that I actually received a call back when I phoned for additional information.
Our experience at the Vance Vogel Sports Complex in Gibsonton was perfect. Every worker there was efficient, knowledgeable and polite, from those directing traffic to those checking our IDs and QR codes, to those actually administering the vaccine. I wish I could thank all of the personnel involved in this operation personally, but this letter is the best I can do.

Realizing Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community | Rubio column, Jan. 18
Rubio needs to listen to us
We, the citizens of Florida, hear from Sen. Marco Rubio infrequently and thus are rarely clear on what the substance of his representation of our interests might be. His Martin Luther King Jr. Day column was clarifying. But it was also hurtful to see him using Dr. King and the vision of Beloved Community for cover, while wordsmithing the GOP agenda that has brought us to this nadir in our country. Rubio’s entire political career to date has been about him and not about us.
Rubio needs to step back and seek a deeper understanding of the flawed foundation upon which we stand and of how best to represent the American people in restructuring and building a future not dictated by his party or his opinion. We need him to listen to us, not to his ambition, and to act with a true commitment to the justice and equity that will serve us all.

Impeaching Trump a mistake | Editorial, Jan. 8
Taking the right stance
I am proud of my local newspaper. Your resolute editorial stance on the transition of power, in the face of firm objection by many of your readers, is courageous and correct. It reminds me of Kipling’s “if you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs…” It is the same, as effectuated by Gandhi, Mandela, King and several other leaders who observed the aphorism that “when you seek vengeance, bring two shovels.” In our own history, Abraham Lincoln’s dream of reconstruction was despoiled by successors who waved the bloody flag, and left us with generations of Jim Crow, and persisting sectionalism on many other issues. Make no mistake. Our present civil war is thankfully largely a cold war, but it is nonetheless real and consequential. It cannot be resolved by ignoring or inflaming the grievances of our neighbors. Let’s give the victor a clear path to achievement, and the defeated an opportunity to support that for the good of the commonweal.

Trump will be a Florida man
As President Donald Trump, apparently unwelcome in his home state of New York, and his entourage arrive in Florida soon, it will be interesting how he fares here. Will he be embraced as a hero? Will he hole up until the dust settles? Time will show and tell.
