NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis to NATO Headquarters on Tuesday (26 January). They exchanged views on the forward-looking NATO2030 process that will ensure the Alliance remains ready to face tomorrow’s challenges, and keep its citizens safe in the next decade and beyond.

The Secretary General thanked the Lithuanian Foreign Minister for hosting the German-led NATO battlegroup as part of NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) measures in the Baltic states. He said he valued Lithuania’s active political and military role in NATO, including Lithuania’s commitment to spend more than 2% of GDP on defence.

Mr. Stoltenberg and Mr. Landsbergis also discussed the security situation in the Baltic Sea region. NATO Secretary General expressed concern about Russia’s continued military build-up in Kaliningrad and the recent arrest of the Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny. He reaffirmed that despite COVID-19, NATO’s deterrence and defence in the Baltic Sea region continues to be credible and effective.
