QUINCY, IL (WGEM) - As you get on the road for your morning commute soon, you probably see a few potholes along the way.
But the city of Quincy is trying to fill those.
Central Services is using a new tool to repair the roads. Officials said the city rented a pothole repair truck from a Kansas company for 90 days to get work done during the summer months.
Crews said this truck has helped them a lot because it heats the concrete and stamps it down, which will help to keep roads from deteriorating during the winter.
“Normally we would just fill the pothole off the back of the dump truck, but now this is actually preheated to 120 or 130 degrees, so we’re doing bigger patches and they should last a lot longer than normal,” Central Services pavement department Thomas Flaiz said.
Flaiz added that crews focus on the most complained road conditions first and then shift focus to the neighborhoods that need it the most.
Crews said the truck speeds up the process a nd they’ll be working on a grid system to address every street before winter.
Central Services adds that they are talking with the city about buying one in the future.
“The idea is this will be a more permanent solution where we’re not going back over and repatching these holes, you know we’ll patch them one week then have to go back over them because they’ve been pushed out or something, so this should be much more cost effective even though there will be a big upfront cost,” Central Services assistant director John Schafer said.
Schafer adds that they will be hiring two temporary workers to operate the truck, so they’ll be able to patch roads during all daylight hours from now through September.
