Assistant coach Mike Gaffney said Sacred Heart-Griffin's 53-37 win over Southeast might have been the team’s best this season. But whether or not it is, what isn’t debatable is that the Cyclones have a few to choose from now.
Senior Meghan Wegner and sophomore Maggie Fleischli combined for 31 points to lead the Cyclones to a win in the City Tournament at the Bank of Springfield Center on Friday.
Getting everyone involved
Wegner knocked down her first three attempts from behind the 3-point line. The final one, just 2 minutes, 24 seconds into the game, caused Southeast coach Mike Collins to call time out.
His adjustment on defense allowed the rest of the SHG offense to shine.
“(Collins) called a timeout because of Meghan,” SHG coach Steve Klunick said. “When you see a coach do that, you can expect him to run people at her or change things up. So the other players stepped up, and you know what? Every one of those players that stepped up was young. So that was nice to see.”

Wegner finished with 16 points while Fleischli had 15. Fleischli, who had four points at halftime, scored 11 in the fourth quarter. That allowed Southeast to turn a 39-34 lead into a comfortable win.
“It was a great start,” Wegner said. “I just had to pick up from a different angle. I didn't have the shot, had to move it around and hit some other teammates for the shot.”
Fleischli had three straight buckets — after a free throw — to start the final period. She drove to the basket for a contested layup to give SHG a 42-34 lead, then teammates found her while she was cutting to the basket for two more scores.
“They're a really good team,” Fleischli said of Southeast. “And they saw that Meghan was a good shooter and they shut her down. So we just kind of had to open the floor up to other people. And I think we did a really good job of that.”
Southeast’s dynamic duo
Senior Diavian Mehundrew and Marisa Gant scored all of Southeast’s 13 points in the first quarter. But despite their best efforts, SHG led 18-13.
But four different players — Chloe Crawford, Ahza Sanders, Kaniyah Dickerson and Brianna Jones — scored for the Spartans in the second quarter to help alleviate pressure off of Mehundrew and Gant, Collins said.
"When we get behind like that, our leaders got to try to get us back going again,” Collins said. “Once we got back going again, we hope that all the other girls get going also.”
Gant opened the second half with a 3-pointer to put Southeast on top 28-26. The lead changed hands six times in the third quarter, including on the final time when Callie Huston put the Cyclones in the lead for the final time.

“We just made a little bit too many mistakes,” Collins said. “You know, second shots, turnovers, things of that nature.
“SHG and Springfield, they're good teams. They will make you pay for any mistakes that you make.”
Mehundrew finished with game-highs in points (17) and rebounds (11). Gant scored 10 points but was limited to 18 minutes because of early foul trouble.
