Back in November, I shocked my colleagues when, upon loading up a push cart to traverse Pinehurst No. 2, I remarked that I had never used one before.

Their reaction: “What?!?!”

It’s true. I’ve yanked along a number of pull carts in my day, and schlepped my bag on my shoulder for the entirety of my junior golf career. But once I graduated from college, I became an unabashed cart-only golfer. Unless, of course, I had a caddie. Walking was just … so much effort. Plus, I live in Arizona now, where cart golf is the norm at many courses.

At the GOLF Top 100 Teacher Summit at Pinehurst last fall, I had the opportunity to play three straight days of golf with co-workers I hadn’t seen in more than two years. I drew Pinehurst No. 2 for one of the days, and since the pace was far from brisk, we decided to eschew the cart and “enjoy the walk.”

Push carts were available for the taking right next to the starter’s hut, so I thought, why not? And as I strolled down the first fairway, I couldn’t believe what I had been missing. The push cart was a dream. My clubs felt as light as air, and I loved all the organizational elements in the cart: a special place for your scorecard, balls, tees, beverage and headcovers. Absolute perfection!

Suffice it to say, I’m a convert. I trekked the seven-mile loop at No. 2 and didn’t even feel a twinge of ache in my shoulders afterward. Now I can’t wait to own a push cart of my own, like this Sun Mountain Pathfinder 3X.

The best part? It folds for easy storage. They’ve truly thought of everything.
