Treating multiple skincare concerns at the same time is no easy task. Typically it takes tons of products, (and time) to make sure you cover your bases. Whether you’re looking for a new skincare BFF that exfoliates, and reveals clearer and brighter skin, or one that targets signs of aging, and acne, liquid exfoliators tackle both.
Liquid exfoliators are chemical exfoliators.
“Liquid exfoliants are chemical exfoliants—these include toners or cleansers containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid, fruit enzymes, citric acid, or malic acid which may be applied in high concentrations by a dermatologist, or in lower concentrations in over-the-counter products,” says Hadley King, MD, a New York City-based dermatologist.
Liquid exfoliation is done using ingredients like “alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids, or enzymes that act to loosen the glue-like substance that holds the cells together, allowing them to ease away,” Dr. King explains.
Liquid exfoliators help remove skin build up for brighter, clearer skin.
But let’s back up a bit. Why is it important to exfoliate your skin? According to Dr. King, exfoliation removes the outermost layers of the epidermis to reveal the newer skin beneath. “This shedding of the outer layer unclogs pores, keeps skin clean, and helps reduce acne breakouts. It also smooths and polishes the skin, decreasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and evening out the texture.” Not to mention, because you no longer have that layer of dead skin blocking your pores, your products are also going to sink in easier and get to work harder and faster.
Choose different liquid exfoliators depending on your skin concerns.
When seeking a liquid exfoliator to add to your skincare routine, make sure to look for ones that contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), and poly hydroxy acids (PHAs). This group of hydroxy acids treats fine lines, wrinkles, and improves skin tone, elasticity, and sun damage. In addition to reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, poly hydroxy acid helps to soothe rosacea and eczema thank to its less irritating nature.
“Hydroxy acids exfoliate by breaking down the glue that holds dull, dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. The difference is that the poly hydroxy acid molecules are larger, so they cannot penetrate as deeply,” Dr. King explains.
And if you’re dealing with acne, Dr. King recommends turning to an exfoliant with salicylic acid. This acid “is an excellent pore-clearing ingredient because it exfoliates the skin’s surface and penetrates into pores to remove oil. This helps to prevent pores from becoming clogged and can help remove clogs that have already formed,” she says. The salicylic acid breaks down the bonds that keep dead skin cells on the surface of the skin.
Before you dive into a liquid exfoliator, Dr. King notes that those with sensitive skin or others using a retinoid-based product may experience irritation, redness, and flaking. So when introducing a new liquid exfoliator, Dr. King suggests easing it into your routine slowly. “I would recommend adding the product initially only once or twice per week and then increasing as tolerated. Limit other products with active ingredients,” she says.
Below you’ll find liquid exfoliators that target and treat some of the most common skincare concerns. Plus, they’re dermatologist-approved too.
