Smooth operation: Springfield provides COVID vaccines to 250 first responders - MassLive.com

SPRINGFIELD — The city provided coronavirus vaccines to approximately 250 police officers, firefighters and other first responders Tuesday at Boland Elementary School.

“The vaccine rollout went very smoothly,” said Helen R. Caulton-Harris, the city’s commissioner of health and human services. “Having the vaccine get into the arms of our first-responders is critical to the health and well-being of those who bravely serve our residents in times of crisis.”

The free vaccines were initially provided to health care workers and residents of long-term care facilities, and have now been extended to first responders.

The program began Tuesday and continues daily through Friday. The hours on Tuesday and Thursday are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the hours on Wednesday and Friday are 8 a.m. to noon.

The vaccine program occurs as Springfield recorded its highest one-week total for new COVID-19 since the pandemic began. There were 1,177 new COVID-19 cases Jan. 3-9 among Springfield residents, officials said.

The vaccine clinic is offered by the city’s Health and Human Services Department in collaboration with American Medical Response (AMR) and Springfield Public Schools nurses, Caulton-Harris said.

After having their temperature checked, first responders filled out intake forms and registered, Caulton-Harris said. They proceeded to six vaccination stations staffed by AMR personnel. After getting the shot they spent a brief time in an observation area in case any vaccine recipients suffered side effects.

“There appeared to be no adverse reactions on site,” Caulton-Harris said. “I am extremely grateful to our partners. Without the collaboration, this vaccination effort could not have been successful.”

The observation and registration areas were staffed by school nurses. School facilities staff provided maintenance at the Boland school on Armory Street.

Local hospital officials are urging the federal and state government to speed up the distribution of the vaccines to combat the spread of the virus.

About 60 sites have been set up around the state to vaccinate an estimated 45,000 people over several weeks, the Associated Press reported.
