General Atomics‘ electromagnetics systems business has signed a cooperative research and development agreement with the U.S. Army to develop sensors for acquiring and tracking targets.

The partnership with the Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Aviation and Missile Center aims to build sensing tools and algorithms to extend the range of missile and weapon systems when deployed in anti-access and area-denial environments, General Atomics said Thursday.

Scott Forney, president of General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems, noted that the company will apply its “decades of experience in the development, testing, and fielding of a variety of weapon, electro-optical/infrared sensors and Laser Detection and Ranging systems” to the project.

GA-EMS personnel will conduct R&D efforts at the company’s facilities in California, Alabama, Texas and Massachusetts.
