Jonathan Brashier is the general manager of Hartness Hospitality where he oversees all things hospitality-related for the 444-acre urban village on Greenville’s Eastside, including the recently-opened Village Kitchen and Hotel Hartness, which is expected to open next fall.
What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
I get the pleasure of wearing a lot of hats throughout the day. Currently on my repertoire, we recently opened our first food and beverage outlet, Village Kitchen, so we’ve been very busy with getting the restaurant open. I work side-by-side with the team on a daily basis on menus, staffing and service expectations and some days you’ll even find me on the floor, running food.
When I’m not in the restaurant, I’m working on our next big project, Hotel Hartness, which will hopefully open in late fall 2022. The hotel is going to feature luxurious accommodations, elevated food offerings, a conference center and a world-class spa. So right now I’m spending a lot of time working on every single detail on the new hotel and all of the amenities. We’re making the final selections on furniture, flooring and lighting and every little accessory that goes in the rooms. We’re in that really exciting phase where we get to put all the fun stuff together.
What’s the most challenging part of your job?
I would probably say two things. Right now in the current world environment, staffing is probably the biggest challenge with the restaurant and lodging industry. My biggest personal challenge that follows me throughout my career is my own OCD. I strive for perfection and sometimes when you want every single thing to be perfect every single day, that can get in the way of progress.
What do you like most about your job?
My favorite thing is the people. I enjoy people. I truly love people. I love meeting new people. I love staying acquainted with people that I’ve known for years. One of my former bosses told me during an annual review one year that I was doing exactly what I was put on this earth to do and that’s taking care of people, and that includes our guests and our associates.
