Schools: Hennessy’s smooth finish leads Springfield to win - The Delaware County Daily Times

Ava Hennessy converted a pass from Sara Bean to break a scoreless tie in the second half, and Coryn Silberstein added an insurance tally as Springfield nipped Garnet Valley, 2-1, in Central League girls soccer action Tuesday.

Caroline Walters assisted on Silberstein’s goal. Emily Boyer was excellent in net for the Cougars (4-1, 2-0). GV’s Michele Dragoni scored midway through the half, but the Jaguars couldn’t get the equalizer.

Also in the Central League:

Ridley 3, Harriton 0 >> The Green Raiders extended their season-opening undefeated streak to six games behind a two-goal performance from Adria Kitzinger. Jess Lefkof also found the back of the net, and Jackie Diesler supplied a pair of assists.

Radnor 1, Haverford 0 >> Selah Koleth registered the game’s only goal in the first half. Goalie Mallory Toomey earned the shutout.

Boys Soccer

Ethan Birch and Traeger Hogarth scored in the opening half of Strath Haven’s 2-1 decision over Upper Darby.

Goalie Charlie Shankweiler ended with two saves for the Panthers. Jake Hooper was credited with an assist.

In the Bicentennial League:

Delco Christian 6, Valley Forge MA 1 >> Max Cardone recorded a goal and two assists for the Knights, who led 5-0 at halftime. Cardone and Cody Dill scored on penalty kicks. Cortez Cardone, Jake Johnson, Nick Vavala and Cam Vavala also scored for DC.

In nonleague action:

Shipley 1, Episcopal Academy 0 >> Akira Heath made five saves in net for the Churchmen.

Golf

Colin Beucler’s round of 38 on The Springhaven Club’s par-35 front nine helped Strath Haven to a 209-231 nonleague win over Cardinal O’Hara.

Beucler had two birdies on the day. Tyler Debusschere added a 39 and Jacson Voshell finished with a 41 for the Panthers.

O’Hara’s Ryan Garney led all players with an excellent 4-under par. He racked up seven pars and one birdie.

In the Central League:

Penncrest 194, Lower Merion 217 >> Eli Shah continued his great start to the season, carding 2-under par-35 for the Lions at Springfield Country Club. Yusuf Ahmed followed with a 37 and Jake Hamilton chipped in a 39.

In the Catholic League:

Bonner-Prendie sweeps >> Chris DiRita shot even par 33 to lead the Friars (227) past Conwell-Egan (293) and St. Hubert (325).

Andrew Roken carded a 35 and Jack Esher posted three birdies en route to a 39.

Volleyball

Kay Wimberly (27 assists, three kills) and Liz Kurcon (24 kills, 18 digs) filled the stat sheet in Penncrest’s 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, 25-17 victory over Avon Grove.

Kelly McDonnell produced 27 digs, and Emma Curran added six kills and five aces. Bridget McKay tossed in 18 assists and six aces.

Agnes Irwin 3, Radnor 0 >> Golda Mahl had seven kills and two blocks as the Owls swept the Raptors, 25-12, 26-25, 25-17. Jenna Zwilling pitched in with six aces.

In the Catholic League:

Cardinal O’Hara 3, St. Hubert 0 >> The Lions (6-0, 1-0) stayed perfect with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-16 win. Bridget McGuinn totaled four kills, eight aces and eight digs. Maggie Doogan contributed eight kills and three blocks, Sarah Kelly added six kills, and Jasmine Sullivan tallied four kills, four aces, six digs and eight assists.

Girls Tennis

No. 1 Samma Zahran and No. 2 Theresa Stolarczyk each won their singles matches without allowing a point as Cardinal O’Hara blanked Bonner-Prendergast, 5-0.

Sophia Bora won at third singles for the Lions 6-1, 6-1.

In the Central League:

Strath Haven 4, Radnor 3 >> The Panthers (7-2, 5-1) managed a clean sweep in doubles play, highlighted by Emily Lin and Claire Lowry’s 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win in the No. 3 spot. Emma Olenik and Calli Sophocles, Emily Short and Hannah Rappaport, and Anna Myers-Maloney and Dania Maqbool all won in straight sets.

Leina Ciarocchi, Mia Xie and Sophie Carter each won in singles action for the Raptors.

In the Del Val League:

Academy Park 4, Chichester 1 >> Chanel Goehoghan, Shaniyah Robinson and Faith Larkin all were victorious in singles competition for the Knights.

Kaitlyn Carpenter and Maddie Marriott won a three-set tiebreaker at first doubles for Chi.

Boys Cross Country

Lower Merion had five runners finish in the top eight to open the Central League season with victories over Garnet Valley (15-42), Conestoga (19-46) and Harriton (19-46).

Sarem Kahn and Simon Schnieder finished first and second, respectively, for the Aces. Kahn crossed the finish line at Rose Tree Park in 16:54.4. Andrew Gannon, Alex Bullard and Davit Litvin were fifth, sixth and eighth respectively.

Haverford also went 3-0 thanks to top 10 finishes from Quentin Ryan, Ethan Fingerhut and Patrick Lawson. Ryan was third overall, Fingerhut fourth and Lawson seventh as the Fords topped Conestoga (19-42), Harriton (19-42) and Garnet Valley (23-33).

Harriton’s Lee Perlstein (ninth) and Garnet Valley’s Michael Colavito (10th) rounded out the top 10. Harriton, Garnet Valley and Conestoga all went 1-2. The Rams defeated Marple Newtown (20-39). The Jaguars also topped the Tigers (15-48), as did the Pioneers (18-42).

Girls Cross Country

Elizabeth Gares led a 1-2-3 finish as Conestoga went 3-0 in the first of three weekly dual meets in the Central League.

Gares was first in 20:21.4, followed by teammates Molly Ryle and Julia Harris. Elia Warkentine placed sixth as the Pioneers topped Lower Merion (15-50), Haverford (24- 33) and Marple Newtown (15-50).

Garnet Valley, Haverford and Harriton all went 2-1. The Jaguars defeated Lower Merion (29-30) and Marple Newtown (27-29). The Fords beat Harriton (15-50) and Garnet Valley (15-50), while the Rams knocked off Lower Merion (26-30) and Marple Newtown (22-37).

Haverford had five runners finish in the top nine. Camryn McGeehan and Francesca Milius were fourth and fifth, respectively, while Shannon Barycki, Olivia Thompson and Mackenzie placed seventh, eighth and ninth.
