Brookfield’s first day of school different but ‘smooth’ - Danbury News Times

BROOKFIELD — Finding the perfect first-day-of-school outfit this year included a face mask, at least for those attending in person under the district’s hybrid model.

It’s one of many changes in place to meet the coronavirus restrictions this year. But though the start to school looks fairly different from previous years, Superintendent John Barile said it has been a smooth transition.

“It’s been a fantastic day,” Barile said Tuesday afternoon.

Under the hybrid model, half of the students attend in person on Mondays and Tuesdays, no one on Wednesdays and the other half comes into school on Thursdays and Fridays.

About 82 percent of the students are participating in the hybrid model and the remaining 18 percent are fully remote. Almost all of the staff have returned too, with the district seeing the normal amount of turnover, Barile said.

Leading up to the first day, Barile said families and staff were excited, anxious and in some cases nervous. Now that the first day is here, he said everyone seems to be excited and joyful to be back.

“The kids you can see are just happy to get back to some sense of normalcy,” he said. “It’s a beautiful thing to see.”

There was a mix of air fives and air hugs, and students were sitting at their desks more instead of working together at tables. Teachers were teaching from the front of the classroom with their laptops facing them so students at home could follow along too.

Barile said he has spent the day visiting classes and waving to students learning remote. He said he has seen students keeping the appropriate distance, using hand sanitizer station, and the older students going outside with their teachers for mask breaks.

More parents also drove their children to school. Even with all of the added cars, Barile said it only took 10 to 15 minutes for all of the students to enter the school, which was less than they thought based on what other districts reported.

Barile said there were a few glitches with the internet connection, but members of the technology department were on hand to help with any issues.

“We’re doing what we can do to help each other,” he said.

Barile said a couple of parents have called the school to say they’ve tested positive for the coronavirus, but their children have not. Those students are still going to be staying at home until their quarantine is done.

“We can control this if everyone is open, honest, transparent and communicative,” he said.

He said he’s thankful for how well everyone is working together to make this school year possible and looks forward to welcoming cohort B in person on Thursday.

“I’m extremely proud of our students, staff and families,” Barile said.
