Lakewood City School District enjoys smooth remote learning start, anticipates hybrid learning model beginnin - cleveland.com

LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- More than two weeks after nearly 4,650 Lakewood City School District students started the 2020-2021 school year from home, Superintendent Michael J. Barnes said the remote learning operation has been a success.

“I suspected this would go well because our staff worked really hard last spring knowing that it could likely be the reality we would not be able to physically be in school starting the 2020-21 school year,” Barnes said.

“We spent that time intentionally working with staff to develop a more sophisticated and robust instructional delivery remotely.”

The result is what the superintendent said was a completely different experience for students compared to last spring when at a moment’s notice due to the shutdown teachers and pupils had to pivot into the unknowns of distance learning.

The district’s goals around remote learning related to student engagement involve certainty, continuity and consistency of instructional delivery.

“At our most recent board meeting, we had a community member indicate she was pleasantly surprised,” Barnes said. “After last spring, she didn’t know how this year would go, but so far it’s a much better experience for her kids as it relates to the start of the school year remotely.”

Looking ahead, Lakewood City Schools remains committed to distance learning for the first quarter.

Despite the fact many other districts are returning to a hybrid model earlier than expected, Barnes said the first quarter approach provided the district with the best chance of maintaining the aforementioned goals. This included giving parents a set schedule related to child care planning.

“We have no regrets,” Barnes said.

Regarding in-person instruction, the district is tying that decision to Gov. Mike DeWine’s four-tier public health advisory system.

If Cuyahoga County has level 1 (yellow) status, Lakewood City Schools will have traditional in-school classes with safety protocols (including mask wearing by students and teachers).

For level 2 (orange), students will be divided and attend school two days a week supplemented by remote learning. At level 3 (red) and level 4 (purple), the district would offer distance learning.

“Currently Cuyahoga County proper is much healthier than we were in spring for us,” Barnes said. “Right now, we’re poised to return to in-person instruction Oct. 19. We’re very excited to get kids back in school. I know that’s where our staff wants to be with our kids.”

The district is also offering for the second quarter two different options for continued remote learning for families not ready to send their child back to school during a pandemic.

There’s remote learning with a Lakewood City Schools teacher, as well as eLearning LKWD. The latter involves an outside online curriculum. The deadline for signups is Sept. 28.

“We’re continuing to meet the needs of our families and provide options,” Barnes said.
