West Side Career Tech Principal reports "smooth opening" to school year - Wilkes-Barre Citizens Voice

The West Side Career and Technology Center “had a smooth opening” to the school year with a hybrid schedule that includes online and in-person instruction, Assistant Director/Principal Richard Rava said Monday at a joint-operating committee meeting.

“Clearly a lot different,” Rava said.

Students in the 9th and 10th grades physically attend classes for career and technical education programming from 7:45 to 11 a.m., and students in 11th and 12th grades have classes from 11 am. to 2:30 p.m.

The school year began Sept. 8 for students. It marked the first time classes were in the school since COVID-19 pandemic shutdown in mid-March.

More than 550 students from the Wyoming Valley West, Dallas, Northwest, Wyoming Area and Lake-Lehman school districts go to the West Side Career and Technology Center.

Rava said the school is “now actively doing some hands-on learning activities” with COVID-19 safety protocols in effect.

“So we’re off to a very, very, very, very good start,” Rava said.

Students receive academic instruction online with a school-issued Chromebook, and teachers are able to stream live to students in a group. Face coverings are required for all students boarding buses, are required to continue wearing face coverings as they enter campus and can only remove face coverings when socially distant or during approved “mask breaks.”

The joint-operating committee voted Monday on a five-year agreement with the union that represents six maintenance employees and five secretaries. Business Manager Grant Palfey called the agreement “a nice compromise.”

It will give union employees the following increases in hourly pay rates: 60 cents in the first year, 57 cents in the second, 55 cents in the third and 50 cents in the fourth and fifth years.

The union agreed that members will start paying a premium share to get health insurance. The premium share will be $520 a year for each employee.
