STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- What started as an open jam session on the streets of Staten Island became a musical partnership that would inspire inclusive outdoor performances across the borough.

AJ Pantaleo and J. Glaze, two Staten Islanders who invested years in the borough’s music scene, joined forces to create the jazz-funk fusion band The Jazztronauts. The duo met while attending a music performance and discovered they knew a lot of the same people.

“We have a revolving cast of musicians that join us all the time,” Pantaleo said. “Josh [J. Glaze] and I are The Jazztronauts, but we have bass players, guitar players, keys players, brass players tend to join us. A lot of them are our friends.”

Glaze plays the trumpet and Pantaleo plays the drums. Before The Jazztronauts officially launched, Pantaleo was based in Brooklyn and had been out of the Staten Island scene for some time. He said Glaze was one of the first people with whom he reconnected, and the two became regulars at local music events. When he is not playing in the band, Glaze is a music producer working out of Staten Island’s House Of Dreams Studio.

Although they both have access to studio space, the duo said they don’t usually rehearse before live shows in order to keep their performance “authentic and fun.”

“There’s a level of musicianship where we can speak the language and understand where the other one is coming from so we don’t have to rehearse,” Glaze said. “We just have a good time with it.”

The band has continued to create music during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. During their time in quarantine, the guys worked on personal projects. Pantaleo released “Sleepy Droner Club,” a monthly exhibition focusing on ambient/electronic music that went virtual.

Recently, the band hosted impromptu performances at Seppe Pizza Bar inside URBY. To keep updated on The Jazztronauts -- and find out where they’ll be next -- follow the band on Instagram and Facebook.
