Drunk Elephant, When You Seek a Smooth and Glowing Skin at all Times - Upscale Living Magazine

Drunk Elephant…South African warthogs love it. Sub-Saharan African rhinos love it.  Sub-equatorial baboons have been known to get intoxicated on it.

Human beings are consequently being turned on to it.

Murala is the taste of Africa. It’s how elephants keep their looks and keep the free radicals at bay.

Have you ever wondered why vervet monkeys never suffer from split ends? And how elephant maintain such young-looking, healthy, hydrated skin? How they protect themselves against acne, UV damage, and other environmental aggressors?

It’s their diet. Not knowing about its proven microbial properties and that it provides ultra-effective after-sun care for sensitive skin types and caring more about its nutritious proteins,  elephants eat prodigious quantities of marula.

And humans are now utilizing the multi-benefit superfruit in a variety of healthy-giving, cosmetic ways. Marula is anti-microbial and non-comedogenic, keeping the skin hydrated by preventing trans-epidermal water loss.

Mother-of-four, Tiffany Masterton founded “Drunk Elephant,” one of- the most successful Marula oil-forward, fragrance-free brands. It is evolving into a lifestyle brand.

The name “Drunk Elephant” is taken from the myth that marula fruit – a favorite of elephants – can make them drunk. Virgin marula oil, straight from the “pip,” can be found throughout the Drunk Elephant line. It is an oil that Masterson believes is superior to anything she’s tried due to the high content of fatty acids and antioxidants.

Says Tiffany: “We never take into account whether something is synthetic or natural, instead choosing ingredients based on biocompatibility. That’s why we focus on healthy pH levels, formulations the skin recognizes, a small molecular structure that’s easily absorbed, and effective active ingredients that also support and maintain the skin’s acid mantle. But what we leave out of our products is just as important as what we put into them, so you’ll never find what we essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrances/dyes, SLS in our line.

“I suffered from all sorts of skin issues. You name it. I had a lot.

“I was a frustrated, confused brand-hopper. I formulated and trademarked by Suspicious Six. I identified six ingredients I thought were at the root of my problems. I eliminated all of them, and my skin became clear and healthy.  I couldn’t find any product without at least one of the six. So I made my own.

Indigenous to the miombo woodlands of southern Africa as well as Madagascar, the yellow plum-like fruit of the 9m female “marriage tree” or “elephant tree” with the mottled grey bark and wide-spreading crown is hand-picked or gathered from the ground from January to March. The fruit is delivered to processing plants where fruit pulp, pips, kernels, and kernel oil are extracted and processed into cooking oil, hair shampoo, and conditioner, nail replenishing crème and lip balm as well as South Africa’s equivalent to “Bailey’s Irish Cream” digestif liqueur, “Amarula.”

The logo took me all of thirty seconds to come up with it. I doodled, and I knew it was right when I saw it, kind of like the first time you saw your husband, or your wedding dress.  It was that simple. I can’t draw.  To save my life. I’m the worst artist ever.  If you gave me a million dollars, I couldn’t recreate that drawing, I know because I’ve tried.  But that’s what I have found to be the most curious thing about this entire process.  Everything with Drunk Elephant it’s been easy and organic and has always felt very “meant to be.

“Drunk Elephant as an ingredient-elimination philosophy for a total skin reset. Treat yourself to a drunk break!”
